The Victorian Major Events Company (VMEC) was formed in 1991, as part of a Victorian Government initiative to attract international cultural and sporting events that require global state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure.
As well as putting Melbourne and Victoria on the world stage, these events help to raise Victoria's international profile and have a positive financial impact on the state.
VMEC markets Melbourne and Victoria to the owners of events, whether they be individuals, companies or associations. VMEC does not operate events. Once VMEC has secured an event, an organising structure is created, addressing all the areas of expertise that are required for that particular event.
To choose which events to host, VMEC monitors all major international events and conducts feasibility studies on those that warrant further investigation. Then a thorough assessment of the event’s history and projected benefits to Melbourne and Victoria is undertaken.
